The next day we arrived at Port Lockroy. This will be our first landing, and my first peek at the penguins. I've been so anxious to get up close to them. Port Lockroy is a natural harbor. We are passing Cape Horn. The water here is known to be very hazardous and rough. (A lot of the passengers got sick while going through this section.) From the 1700's to the early 1900's, Cape Horn was a part of the clipper ship trade routes which carried a lot of the world's trade. You didn't want to leave your spot, because you would probably lose it. This little kid kept riding by me asking me to buy something. He had a soft drink I could buy. It didn't matter which flavor of soft drink they had, it was always called Pepsi. At that point, a cup of hot chocolate would have tasted really good because I was so cold. This was our guide. The guides will walk along with you and explain the history and the legends. It was so fascinating to learn how the place started. It was carved by the Nabataeans around the 6th century BC. They turned it into an important junction for the silk and spice trade, and other trade routes that linked China, India, and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. Amazing.May 29, 2010

The tomb facades were built from the top down. First the scaffolding was built, and then they cut grooves into the rock. Next they put pieces of wood into the grooves, which when made wet, expanded and cracked the rock. Wow! Pretty ingenious. And they didn't even have the book called, "TOMB BUILDING FOR DUMMIES!"May 29, 2010

So my friend Kristin and I decided to walk. It turned out to be a long walk along a dusty trail, called The Sig. The trail twists and turns and sometimes it's only 12 feet wide.
