22 viewsThis was taken inside the pod. I recommend this ride if you are going to go to London. Just make sure you make your reservation before you go, or as soon as you arrive in London. It fills up fast.

22 viewsWe have left Kota Kinabalu and have headed south to go to Brunei, which is a sovereign state located on the coast of the island of Borneo. Borneo is the third largest island in the world, and it is located just north of Australia. It is also the largest island in the Malay Archipelago.

22 viewsIt isn't hard to tell we have left the Sultan's grounds. It also doesn't matter where you travel, you will always see a Coke sign.
22 viewsOur next stop was the Royal Regalia Museum of Brunei. It allows visitors to learn more about the history of Brunei's constitution. You also get to see valuables previously owned by the Sultan and his entire family.

22 viewsEspecially those of you who have cruised, you will recognize this boat as the pilot boat. The captain does not take the ship into the harbor. The Filipino pilot does this. The same thing happens in reverse. The pilot will guide the ship out of the harbor, get back on his little tug, and the ship's captain once again takes over. It's fun to watch.

22 viewsA goose bump photo for me. There is nothing like hearing your country's national anthem played at the Olympics. I was so proud!
22 viewsAfter I had this photo taken, I turned around and looked out over the beach. Since I have done a great deal of reading about D-Day, and have watched so many movies and documentaries about it, I could almost picture the action and the horribleness of the whole thing. My mind's eye could see the guys trying desperately to reach the beach, screaming for their buddies, and not making it. It was an emotional experience, but I am glad I finally got to be there.

21 viewsThe next day we arrived at Port Lockroy. This will be our first landing, and my first peek at the penguins. I've been so anxious to get up close to them. Port Lockroy is a natural harbor. It was used for whaling, and for British military operations during WWII. It was later turned into a British research station.
21 viewsWell, look at this. A sleeping leopard seal. The ones that like to eat the penguins.

21 viewsThese little guys were NOT shy, in fact, they really showed off for us.

21 viewsPart of our day we used the cars, and then we had a delightful little bus...with snacks.
21 viewsIt's time for a little group photo.

21 viewsAll of these guys were like brothers, and I treated them like they were. Actually, for some of them, I was old enough to be their mom!

21 viewsThe Forbidden City covers 178 acres, and although it once had over 9,000 buildings, there are only 980 surviving ones. It has been the home of 24 emperors. The whole city is surrounded by high walls and a moat, which were mostly for defense.
21 viewsNow we are at the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the largest of all of the buildings rising 98 feet above the courtyard. It was the ceremonial center of imperial power, and it's the largest surviving wooden structure in China. In the middle is the ceremonial ramp which was part of the Imperial Way.

21 viewsAfter we get through this town, we will be there.
21 viewsHere it is....the beginning of the climb. It was really cold out, so you didn't have to worry about a lot of tourists being around.
21 viewsOh my gosh! It was so cold when I started out, and now I'm so hot from the climb. And I've got a long way to go yet.
21 viewsWhile I was resting a bit, I took this picture of how far I still had to go. Oy vey!

21 viewsAs we got closer, I began smelling something that wasn't too pleasant.
21 viewsThere is evidently no garbage system here. On the other hand, I guess there is: just throw it out the door!
21 viewsWOW! With the heat and humidity, the smell of this garbage was unbelievable. Almost nauseating. BTW, do you see that most of the houses have TV antennas.

21 viewsI am taking a trip across the South China Sea, and this is the small ship that I am on.
21 viewsThings were going smoothly. I would relax out on the deck during the day.
21 viewsI looked so dang good, I decided to dress up for dinner. This is one of my table mates.
21 viewsRemember I said that things were going smoothly? Well, at 3:00 am, the captain came over the loud speaker and told all of the passengers that a cyclone was heading our way, and he was going to have to turn the ship immediately. He didn't want us to be alarmed if the ship leaned over QUITE A BIT! My cabin was the last place I wanted to be, so I barreled it for the top deck.
21 viewsIt DID feel good to have my feet on solid ground!
21 viewsThis was an unscheduled day, so many people just went for a walk. Some took a taxi to look around.
21 viewsExcept for the main highway along the harbor, most of the streets were narrow and very crowded.
21 viewsThis bus on the right is called a Jeepney, and they are very popular with the tourists.

20 viewsThis was a sad sight. The land form in the distance is Vietnam. We were supposed to go there, but due to the high winds, the ship couldn't get into the port. There were so many Vietnam vets aboard, and it had taken many of them all of these years to want to go back for a visit. Now they couldn't!
20 viewsSee the pretty plant with the BARF BAG in the middle of it! Not only were most of the passengers sick, a lot of staff was, too. Since I stayed outside most of the time, I think that had something to do with the fact that I DIDN'T get sick. I drank in that fresh air.
20 viewsIt was funny, the next morning it was pretty much the same people from last night that were out of the deck. The captain came out, and we told him "thanks for the E-ticket ride." He was such a nice guy. He even put his cap on my head for the picture. BTW....you know that nice hair-do I had earlier? GONE!

20 viewsThere is a dungeon in the basement, and it's really creepy. One of the displays was this device called "The Rack." Wouldn't that be a horrible way to die!

19 viewsThis is just one of the old whaling boats that was there.

19 viewsI had this one taken overlooking the field. I told everyone around me the story about being John's teacher, and that I would go see him when he was in the Olympics. By the time he came out for his event, and they announced his name, the crowd around me went wild. He told me later he heard the roar from my section. :O)
19 viewsTalk about role reversal. I met John the next day, and followed HIM around as he visited his sponsors. He had come a long way from sixth grade.
19 viewsMy brother was so honored by this clinic. Before he died of ALS, Michael was able to travel here and see the clinic for himself. How proud he felt! He so loved the Bolivian people, and he had a real passion for their needs.

19 viewsThese are called Duck boats. They are amphibious crafts that were first used in the D-Day landings. In WWII, they were known as DUKWS. Of course, now they have been totally refurbished, and comfortable hold 30 people. No, I didn't get a chance to take one of these.
