We are now at the Iguazu Falls, located between Argentina and Brazil.
|
|
This is the famous part of the Falls called Devil's Throat, and is best seen from the Brazilian side. It is U-shaped and is considered the most impressive of all the 275 falls.
|
|
These we some odd little characters. They are called Coatimundis, racoon-like animals with masked eyes and very long, ringed tails.
|
|
They love to follow the tourists hoping they will get a treat. We were told NOT to sit down anywhere if we had any candy in our backpacks.
|
|
They weren't kidding. They follow you everywhere.
|
|
Have poncho.............ready to go down closer to the falls.

Wow! Between the heat and humidity, and the spray from the falls, I'm already soaked!

EEEEEEEEEK! It's a good thing the trail turns here, or I would have been walking right into this thing!

These falls and taller and wider than Niagara Falls. It's spread in a horseshoe. It's the result of a volcanic eruption which left this large crack in the earth.

They can say you can hear the roar of the falls from miles around.
|
|
Fourteen of the falls drop 350 feet with such force that there is always a 100 foot cloud of spray overhead. Yes! It was a bit scary standing up there!

If you want a tamer place to view the falls, you could go out on this landing.
|
|
For the braver ones, you could go out on this landing. Warning: YOU WILL GET WET!

This was the smart way to do it, with their bathing suits on.
|

There is an upper and a lower part of the falls. I'm heading down the trail which goes more than 3000 feet.

Here is some trivia for those of you who watch the soap opera "One Life to Live." Supposedly, on an episode in 1987, Tina Lord Roberts was seen jumping over the falls to her death. Of course, later she was found alive.

For you movie goers, here is some trivia for you. The Iguazu Falls, which means "great falls" in the native language, was featured in several movies. Here they are: (1979) Moonraker, (1985) The Mission, (1997) Mr. MaGoo, (2006) Miami Vice, and in (2008) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Wow....who knew!

I don't know what type of tree this is, I just thought it was interesting. It looks like the tree has dreads! :O)

One last look at the lower falls before we start trekking back up to the top. Believe you me, it was a WALK! It was so much easier going down.

I got this shot showing the Iguazu River. You can see by this photo that the falls were in the tropical jungle.

Why am I so happy? Because after the heat, the humidity, 3,967 mosquito bites and little AC to be found, I'm happy that I am going HOME! The falls were incredible, and I really enjoyed seeing them, but if you aren't a hot weather person, it takes some persevering to make it through three days.

The last photo of our group. After Antarctica and the Iguazu Falls, a lot of us became very good friends, and we still correspond with each other.
