Yangtze River
YGZ001 001.jpg
My next adventure is cruising down the Yangtze River. This is when they were loading the boat with our food.
YGZ002 001.jpg
They were working up a sweat getting all of this stuff on the boat.
YGZ003 001.jpg
Okay.......not EVERY ONE was working so hard!
YGZ004 001.jpg
Here we are starting out on our cruise. The Yangtze River is the third largest in the world, after the Amazon and the Nile.
YGZ005 001.jpg
The waters of the Yangtze originate at the "top of the world" on the Tibet Plateau. It flows for 3,900 miles through China and empties into the South China Sea.
YGZ007 001.jpg
Our first sunset on the Yangtze.
YGZ007 002.jpg
Since this wasn't a large cruise ship, the cabins were really small, but very cozy.
YGZ008 001.jpg
We have come to Sandouping village to see the site of the new Three Gorges Dam project. It is known as the biggest hydropower-complex in the world.
YGZ009 001.jpg
The dam is being built for flood control, irrigation and electricity.
YGZ010 001.jpg
Unfortunately, building the dam came with some major problems. The dam covers a lot of historic sites, and has caused 1.24 million people to lose their homes under rising water. New cities are being built above the downtown areas.
YGZ012 001.jpg
Now we are at the Gezhou Dam and have to go through the lock.
YGZ013 001.jpg
We've worked our way into the lock. That's a working boat next to us.
YGZ014 001.jpg
It's about lunch time. This shot shows how they cook at the back of the boats.
YGZ015 001.jpg
One of the girls on our boat fixing the meal.
YGZ016 001.jpg
This was our guide peeling.......well, you probably don't want to know.
YGZ017 001.jpg
Maybe you want a little cooked snake with your lunch?
YGZ018 001.jpg
Bathroom break!
YGZ019 001.jpg
Now we have transferred to a little sampan. This is the Wu Gorge and a larger boat couldn't make it through here.
YGZ020 001.jpg
We are going up the Da'ning River through the Lesser Three Gorges. These are the boat hands getting us through it.
YGZ021 001.jpg
We passed several other sampans going the other direction.
YGZ022 001.jpg
After finally coming to the Li River, we were able to get off and walk around and enjoy the scenery and all of the limestone peaks.
YGZ023 001.jpg
This is what our sampan looked like. Notice the plank on the left side of the boat. That is how we got on and off!
YGZ024 001.jpg
This was a sampan on the other side of the river, and this kid was hauling food up to his little town.
YGZ025 001.jpg
We saw lots of buffalo ambling down to the banks for a dip.
YGZ026 001.jpg
Here is one taking a swim.
YGZ027 001.jpg
It's time to go home. Even the baby followed.........ahhhhhhhh!
YGZ028 001.jpg
Apparently clothing is optional!
YGZ029 001.jpg
He was hauling the fish he had caught back to his town.
YGZ030 001.jpg
We saw lots of kids swimming in the river.
YGZ031 001.jpg
Lots of fishing going on both from shore and from these little rafts.
YGZ032 001.jpg
This kid is trying to sell us stuff.
YGZ033 001.jpg
A common sight was seeing these washerwomen squatting along the shore.
YGZ034 001.jpg
We are back on our bigger boat. This is one of the really sweet ladies I got to meet on the trip.
YGZ035 001.jpg
We passed a day boat going back to Beijing.
YGZ036 001.jpg
So often through the years I would see these beautiful Chinese paintings with these pointy hills on them. I wondered if they were real. They are. We are now heading to Guilin where I got to see this magnificent and stunning scenery!
YGZ037 001.jpg
This is absolutely amazing!
YGZ038 001.jpg
Just beautiful!
YGZ039 001.jpg
It's easy to see why this is one of China's supreme tourist sights. You can't see from the photo, but behind the palms are the rice fields.
YGZ040 001.jpg
This was one of my favorite photo, but, unfortunately, it came back with this light red line through it. But you can still see how beautiful and magnificent the scenery is.
YGZ041 001.jpg
We are leaving the Guilin area and heading to the market town of Yangshuo.
YGZ042 001.jpg
These are the first cormorants I've seen. Their necks are leashed, and they wait on the raft until it's their time to go fishing. When they have caught the fish, they jump back on the raft and give the fish to the fisherman. Because their necks are leashed, they can't swallow the fish.
YGZ042 002.jpg
Oh wow! I got to see the birds close up.
YGZ042 003.jpg
This photo is showing how the fishermen use the cormorants at night. They have their little lanterns hanging on the back of the raft.
YGZ043 001.jpg
The town of Yangshuo is where we left the boat. Yangshuo is the producer of China's most famous inventions - tea and silk. Interesting!
YGZ044 001.jpg
We finish our Yangtze River trip by walking around this interesting market town. It was a fun way to end our trip.
