Cover for "Baltic and Kids"
BAL001 001.jpg
We are ready to head to London for our trip.
BAL002 001.jpg
My cute kids....Adam and Erica.
BAL003 001.jpg
Sunrise as we approach London.
BAL004 001.jpg
After a wild taxi ride, we made it to our hotel. The doorman looks a little short next to Adam!
BAL005 001.jpg
Our hotel was typical of the older London hotels, but it was really nice.
BAL006 001.jpg
We made it....we made it! My funny kids!
BAL007 001.jpg
We are ready to start sightseeing, but Adam looks a little tired.
BAL008 001.jpg
That's Parliament in the background.
BAL009 001.jpg
This is Big Ben, the famous clock in London.
BAL010 001.jpg
We made it over to Buckingham Palace in time to see the horse guards.
BAL011 001.jpg
That is Buckingham Palace in the background.
BAL012 001.jpg
We are waiting for the changing of the guard.
BAL012 003.jpg
The wait was worth it. The changing of the guard was awesome.
BAL013 001.jpg
We were able to see the horse guards up close.
BAL014 001.jpg
He doesn't bite, right?
BAL016 001.jpg
There are so many beautiful cathedrals in London.
BAL017 001.jpg
We decided to take a bus to see more sights around London.
BAL018 001.jpg
There were so many people hanging around Trafalgar Square.
BAL019 001.jpg
We should have ridden the bus from the beginning. It was so much fun, and a lot easier on our feet!
BAL020 001.jpg
We decided to have a traditional English meal, so we picked out this pub for dinner.
BAL021 001.jpg
This is Shepherd's Pie. It wasn't that bad but we had to wait over an hour for it.
BAL022 001.jpg
We went to Victoria Station for a train ride to Windsor Castle.
BAL023 001.jpg
It wasn't hard at all finding our train.
BAL024 001.jpg
It took us about an hour to get there.
BAL025 001.jpg
After our fun train ride, we had to walk up to the town to get to the castle.
BAL026 001.jpg
We are finally at Windsor Castle, the largest occupied castle in the world.
BAL027 001.jpg
We are in the central area of the castle. The place is amazing.
BAL028 001.jpg
The Queen's Guards are also here at Windsor Castle.
BAL029 001.jpg
After spending several hours touring the castle, we decided to go get something to eat.
BAL030 001.jpg
Erica decided to get some video of Windsor before we left.
BAL031 001.jpg
We are back at the train station waiting for the train back to London.
BAL032 001.jpg
The next day we went to Madame Tussauds, a very popular tourist spot.
BAL034 001.jpg
Mel Gibson.....well, I USED to think he was "hot."
BAL035 001.jpg
Erica with Indiana Jones.
BAL036 001.jpg
Adam with the big "Ali."
BAL037 001.jpg
We rested at the hotel for awhile then headed to the London Hard Rock Cafe.
BAL038 001.jpg
We were there for quite awhile enjoying the food and music.
BAL039 001.jpg
We were there for quite awhile enjoying the food and music.
BAL040 001.jpg
After three great days in London, we got on the bus and headed soutn for Dover where we would board our cruise ship.
BAL041 001.jpg
It was a fairly long ride, but we enjoyed seeing the English countryside, and watching cars driving on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! =()
BAL042 001.jpg
We finally arrived at the seaside town of Dover.
BAL043 001.jpg
We were fascinated by the hovercraft leaving for France. This is a craft capable of traveling over surfaces while supported by a cushion of slow moving, high pressure air. In this photo, it is just beginning to turn around.
BAL044 001.jpg
In no time, it was at the shoreline. They hold almost 400 passengers and 60 cars.
BAL045 001.jpg
Wow.....they really move fast. Several years ago, I was on one of these with my mom and sister. It was tremendous fun, but I'll have to admit that I got very seasick by the end of the trip.
BAL046 001.jpg
I loved this photo for three things: the boat, the White Cliffs of Dover, and the castle up on the hill.
BAL047 001.jpg
They took our photo as we boarded the ship.
BAL048 001.jpg
This was our first view of the ship's foyer. Beautiful!
BAL049 001.jpg
We found our deck, now we just have to find our cabin.
BAL050 001.jpg
Erica found it!
BAL051 001.jpg
One of the first places we went was the dining room. Nice!
BAL052 001.jpg
We went out on deck so we could watch the ship leave the port.
BAL053 001.jpg
Our captain getting the ship ready to leave.
BAL054 001.jpg
About an hour out, we had to get ready for the life boat drill. Of course, this gave my son a chance to CHOKE his mother! )
BAL055 001.jpg
Our first sunset on board the ship.
BAL056 001.jpg
AS we were getting ready for dinner, Adam, being so tall, broke the light!
BAL057 001.jpg
The dining room was so festive.
BAL058 001.jpg
We soon found out that you get a lot of food!
BAL059 001.jpg
Adam is in heaven.
BAL060 001.jpg
Yum...baked Alaska the first night!
BAL061 001.jpg
The following day was a day at sea, and it was so rough. Fortunately, none of us got sick.
BAL062 001.jpg
It's not "watch" your step, it's "mind" your step!
BAL063 001.jpg
Toward evening, the weather cleared and it was smooth sailing.
BAL064 001.jpg
This photo was taken from one of the reading spots aboard ship.
BAL065 001.jpg
That evening we decided to take advantage of being able to eat in your cabin. This is just Adam's food!
BAL066 001.jpg
Lobster, no less! Wow!
BAL067 001.jpg
Our first port is.............yes, Norway!
BAL068 001.jpg
This is our ship in the port of Oslo, Norway.
BAL069 001.jpg
For a couple of hours, we just walked around town looking at everything.
BAL070 001.jpg
They sure look Norwegian!
BAL071 001.jpg
Most people we saw didn't dress like this. She had on a folk costume and was on her way to the restaurant where she worked.
BAL072 001.jpg
Our first tourist spot was at the Viking Museum.
BAL073 001.jpg
This is a photo of the Oseberg ship. It is the most famous Viking ship that is still completely whole. Pretty amazing!
BAL074 001.jpg
We've headed way up the mountain to the Holmenkollen Ski jump, and this is the museum next to it.
BAL075 001.jpg
I have such silly but fun kids!
BAL076 001.jpg
This is our first view of the ski jump. It was used in the 1952 Winter Olympics, but is still used each winter by the Norwegians, who have a passion for skiing.
BAL077 001.jpg
From this angle it doesn't look so high and not very scary.
BAL078 001.jpg
This is our "been to the ski jump" photo.
BAL079 001.jpg
Now it's starting to look a little scary....no, a LOT scary! I can't begin to imagine what it must be like to ski jump!
BAL080 001.jpg
This shows where the spectators sat.
BAL081 001.jpg
The summer view of the ski jump.
BAL082 001.jpg
This is one of Norway's infamous trolls like the ones used in fairy tales. I just had to buy a couple...small ones!
BAL083 001.jpg
The next day we went to the Vigeland Sculpture Park.
BAL084 001.jpg
This fountain was the first sculpture we saw.
BAL085 001.jpg
Most of the sculptures were pretty erotic. We had to try hard not to get one in the background.
BAL086 001.jpg
Most Europeans are used to sculptures like this. It is so part of their culture.
BAL087 001.jpg
Notice how dirty her boobs are. I wonder how they got so dirty! = )
BAL088 001.jpg
We are back on the ship and Erica has just woken up from a nap.
BAL089 001.jpg
Mom.....stop!
BAL090 001.jpg
Do you think this is a good hairdo for dinner?
BAL091 001.jpg
My beautiful girl all dressed up for dinner.
BAL092 001.jpg
I took this one of her on the staircase.
BAL093 001.jpg
After our delicious dinner, we went out on the deck to watch the sun set.
BAL094 001.jpg
Time to read a little before nite-nite time.
BAL095 001.jpg
Our next port is Copenhagen.
BAL096 001.jpg
This is The Little Mermaid, the symbol of Copenhagen.
BAL097 001.jpg
This is the town hall in the center of Copenhagen.
BAL098 001.jpg
One of the first things you notice about Copenhagen are the unusual buildings.
BAL099 001.jpg
This is the spire on top of the town hall.
BAL100 001.jpg
I LOVE these buildings!
BAL101 001.jpg
Copenhagen is such a beautiful city.
BAL102 001.jpg
Near Town Hall is the beautiful Palace Hotel.
BAL103 001.jpg
Erica looked so cute walking through town. She got lots of looks from the guys.
BAL104 001.jpg
We stopped a bit by these bicycles before we visited Tivoli Gardens.
BAL105 001.jpg
Tivoli Gardens is both an amusement park and a garden where a lot of people stroll during the day.
BAL106 001.jpg
We made our way back to the ship and Erica had time to write some cards home.
BAL107 001.jpg
I just had to get some pictures of Erica out by the pool. She is just so cute.
BAL108 001.jpg
My kids made the trip so much fun.
BAL109 001.jpg
One of the pleasures of being on a cruise is relaxing on the deck.
BAL110 001.jpg
We were still in Copenhagen the next day so we headed over to Amalienborg Palace, home of Danish Royal family.
BAL111 001.jpg
The Royal Guard is an elite force of the Danish army, and their main responsibility is to protect the Queen of Denmark.
BAL112 001.jpg
Each guard has a two hour duty.
BAL113 001.jpg
This is the changing of the guard, but one of them couldn't quit laughing. I guess they aren't as strict as the guards have to be in London.
BAL114 001.jpg
I had fun taking this picture. The red coat inside the guard house is used when it rains.
BAL115 001.jpg
This guard was biting his lip trying not to laugh.
BAL116 001.jpg
We have gone over to the main part of town.
BAL117 001.jpg
Look how close these boats are to the side of the bridge!
BAL118 001.jpg
The boat didn't look this big when it started out from under the bridge. That's a lot of people.
BAL119 001.jpg
After watching the boats for awhile, we decided we wanted to take a ride on one of them.
BAL120 001.jpg
This is the word for toilet! Seems appropriate! = )
BAL121 001.jpg
Here we are starting our boat tour.
BAL122 001.jpg
My two cuties.
BAL123 001.jpg
After going through the canals, we went out into more open water. That is our cruise ship we are passing.
BAL124 001.jpg
Waving before they got off the boat.
BAL125 001.jpg
These were jellyfish right beside the boat.
BAL126 001.jpg
We walked back over by the canal to look at all of the boats.
BAL127 001.jpg
We all loved being here in Copenhagen. It's just so quaint and pretty.
BAL128 001.jpg
Our last view of Copenhagen as we head to our next port.
BAL129 001.jpg
Just another beautiful evening on board ship.
BAL130 001.jpg
It was such a peaceful evening laying out in our beach chairs and watching the sun go down.
BAL131 001.jpg
It doesn't matter what Erica wears she always looks so adorable.
BAL132 001.jpg
We've stopped in Stockholm, Sweden, and are walking along the street going toward Old Town.
BAL133 001.jpg
But first it's our stop at the Hard Rock Cafe.
BAL134 001.jpg
I got this picture of them inside the Hard Rock.
BAL135 001.jpg
Next to the Hard Rock was a McDonalds.
BAL136 001.jpg
Erica found a clothes store she wanted to check out.
BAL137 001.jpg
Adam and I just waited outside and watched people.
BAL138 001.jpg
Strolling down the pedestrian walkway to the Old Town.
BAL139 001.jpg
They are just acting like they are drinking the water. I told them not to get any of it in their mouth because they might pick up some heebie-jeebie germs.
BAL140 001.jpg
In Old Town there were a lot of musicians and dancers. This was one of them.
BAL141 001.jpg
I hope he finishes what he is doing before the ice cream starts to drip!
BAL142 001.jpg
This man was playing something like a flute.
BAL143 001.jpg
These were Russian kids here in Stockholm trying to make a little money.
BAL144 001.jpg
We have walked our feet off today, and have a long walk back to the ship, unless we can figure out the bus system.
BAL145 001.jpg
We've left Sweden, and now we are getting ready to tie up at the pier in Finland.
BAL146 001.jpg
We couldn't resist taking this funny picture.
BAL147 001.jpg
We didn't have that long in Helsinki, so we headed over to the famous market place.
BAL148 001.jpg
There were a lot of nice, handmade things to buy.....and we did.
BAL149 001.jpg
I bought a real fur hat from this man. Unfortunately, it never gets cold enough here in Tulsa to ever get to wear it much. It's a nice souvenir, though
BAL150 001.jpg
Erica didn't seem to like what she saw cooking there.
BAL151 001.jpg
This lady made these beautiful dolls, so both Erica and bought one.
BAL152 001.jpg
There was an abundance of flowers at the market.
BAL153 001.jpg
Even though it was just a short time in Helsinki, we had a great time. Here Erica is video taping some of the other boats in the harbor.
BAL154 001.jpg
I went up to the top deck to get this picture of her way down there.
BAL155 001.jpg
I took this picture of Erica from the other side of the swimming pool.
BAL156 001.jpg
It's dress up night and Erica is wearing a dress she got in Israel.
BAL157 001.jpg
Both of them look so good.
BAL158 001.jpg
Our dress-up night photo taken by the ship's photographer.
BAL158 002.jpg
I got up early so I could watch us come into the port of St. Petersburg, Russia.
BAL159 001.jpg
We still have some canals to go down before we arrive.
BAL160 001.jpg
It was daylight by the time we arrived in port
BAL161 001.jpg
There was a small band there to welcome us.
BAL162 001.jpg
We decided to walk around and get a feel for the city.
BAL163 001.jpg
We noticed there were many large plazas like this but with very few people in them.
BAL164 001.jpg
It seemed that this was the way most people got around.
BAL165 001.jpg
We couldn't figure out the name of the movie that was showing. Gee...I wonder why!
BAL166 001.jpg
We found a market we could visit.
BAL167 001.jpg
Lots of stacking dolls, also called Matrushka dolls. I bought one that was of Bill Clinton. Really funny.
BAL168 001.jpg
We bought several things from this nice girl.
BAL169 001.jpg
There are so many canals here in St. Petersburg. Like Venice, in a way.
BAL170 001.jpg
I thought this window was photogenic.
BAL171 001.jpg
A group of Russian women waiting for a trolley.
BAL172 001.jpg
We are in the house of Rasputin. He was known as the Siberian mystic heealer.
BAL173 001.jpg
Adam is walking into one of the rooms.
BAL174 001.jpg
This is a photo of Rasputin and his family.
BAL175 001.jpg
This board gave you a lot of information about him.
BAL176 001.jpg
Adam is peaking through at Erica as we head to the basement.
BAL177 001.jpg
It was creepy down in the basement. There was a table with a wax Rasputin sitting at the head of it. It was also pretty dark in there making it more creepy.
BAL178 001.jpg
This was Erica looking up as she headed down to the basement.
BAL179 001.jpg
This is the very strange, dark bathroom they had there.
BAL180 001.jpg
The church in the background is called the Monastery Church of St. Petersburg.
BAL181 001.jpg
This is a closer view of the church. I loved the blue.
BAL182 001.jpg
Adam decided to buy this car when we were there! Nah! Not really!
BAL183 001.jpg
There are boat trips you can take through the canals.
BAL184 001.jpg
This canal goes by the Church of our Saviour.
BAL184 001~0.jpg
This canal goes by the Church of our Saviour.
BAL185 001.jpg
This place is so beautiful from every side.
BAL186 001.jpg
This shows a close-up of the spires. So amazing!
BAL187 001.jpg
Adam and Erica in front of the church.
BAL188 001.jpg
I am sitting on another side of the church. No matter where you stand or sit, the church is still gorgeous.
BAL189 001.jpg
This is The Hermitage. Formerly, it was the home of tsars, but now it is a museum that holds some of the finest art collections in the world.
BAL190 001.jpg
These are the main steps that go up into the museum.
BAL191 001.jpg
These magnificent chandeliers were everywhere.
BAL192 001.jpg
This is the gilded coach used by Catherine the Great. It was unbelievable!
BAL193 001.jpg
I'm standing on the stairs getting ready to go into one of the great art exhibits. It would take days to go through the whole thing.
BAL194 001.jpg
That evening we were taken to see a Russian performance.
BAL195 001.jpg
This was the orchestra.
BAL196 001.jpg
Now the dancing has begun.
BAL197 001.jpg
He is dancing the Russian peasant dance.
BAL198 001.jpg
The music with these dances was great.
BAL199 001.jpg
Adam with one of the dancers.
BAL200 001.jpg
Erica had her picture taken with the same girl.
BAL201 001.jpg
The band played on as we boarded the ship.
BAL202 001.jpg
We have left St. Petersburg and have made our way to Tallinn, Estonia.
BAL203 001.jpg
Here we are watching the ship get closer to the port.
BAL204 001.jpg
This is the pilot boat that came in with us.
BAL205 001.jpg
These cranes are so huge.
BAL206 001.jpg
We have finally been tied up to the pier.
BAL207 001.jpg
We have finally left the ship and are headed into the city of Tallinn.
BAL208 001.jpg
This a government building in the center of the city.
BAL209 001.jpg
It has started raining, and you can see Erica peeking out from a building.
BAL209 002.jpg
Tallinn is surprisingly beautiful and is one of the Baltic's greatest surprises. It is proud of being one of Northern Europe's best preserved medieval towns.
BAL210 001.jpg
We are in the oldest part of the town. The buildings are so bright.
BAL211 001.jpg
This is the tower called Tall Hermann. Pretty soon you won't be able to see it at all.
BAL212 001.jpg
Some of the buildings looked like they were from a fairy tale.
BAL213 001.jpg
We are headed to the Town Hall Square that has been there since the 11th century.
BAL214 001.jpg
This cute little building was our shelter for awhile from the rain. Turns out there were a lot of Estonian things for sale.
BAL215 001.jpg
We made it to this Russian antique shop. I looked for old books and Adam looked at the coins.
BAL215 002.jpg
Wow........those steps were steep! As you can see we had been poured on, but we were still having so much fun.
BAL217 001.jpg
Another "gingerbread-looking" building.
BAL218 001.jpg
Here we are in this 11th century town and we see a McDonalds umbrella!
BAL219 001.jpeg
This is the Town Square where all of the markets had been set up before the storm came through. A few brave people, probably tourists, stayed around to have lunch.
BAL220 001.jpg
Fortunately, before we finished touring around the town, the rain stopped and we got dried out.
BAL221 001.jpg
This was the actual McDonalds in the town.
BAL222 001.jpg
It's a few hours later, and we are back on the ship having an afternoon snack.
BAL223 001.jpg
Overnight we have sailed to the port of Gdansk, a major international transportation hub situated in the central part of the Southern Baltic coast.
BAL224 001.jpg
Gdansk, Poland is where the beginning of World War II began.
BAL225 001.jpg
There were several tugs along side of us as we headed to the pier
BAL226 001.jpg
We saw this sign as we left the ship for our sightseeing.
BAL227 001.jpg
McDonald's restaurant is even in Poland!
BAL228 001.jpg
This is the arch that leads into the town of Gdansk.
BAL229 001.jpg
Just having a little bit of fun in front of the sign.
BAL230 001.jpg
You can see the spire of the Town Hall in the background along with the colorful buildings.
BAL231 001.jpg
We are still in the same area, but I wanted to get a photo of these buildings.
BAL232 001.jpg
This is just one of the beautiful fountains we saw in the square.
BAL233 001.jpg
I thought this lamp was so decorative and picturesque.
BAL234 001.jpg
We were there when all of the flower boxes were full of blooms.
BAL235 001.jpg
Time to call home.
BAL236 001.jpg
It took a a little while to figure out how to use the phone.
BAL237 001.jpg
After our phone calls, we found this great market.
BAL238 001.jpg
Erica tried on these boots, but they didn't fit. Too bad because everything there was quite inexpensive.
BAL239 001.jpg
We were all thirsty so we found this stand that sold Coke.
BAL240 001.jpg
It was also a nice place to sit and relax.
BAL241 001.jpg
I loved the decorations on this building.
BAL242 001.jpg
Such beautiful architecture.
BAL243 001.jpg
These building were also along the town square.
BAL244 001.jpg
This was the prison and torture house built in the 14th century. In the beginning it was a defensive tower, but when it lost it's importance as a protector of the city, it became the prison. The Torture Tower had many rooms they used just for torturing.
BAL245 001.jpg
This street was almost destroyed during the war, but now most of it has been restored back to it's original state and look.
BAL246 001.jpg
A lot of medieval plays were being enacted along the square.
BAL247 001.jpg
Many of the locals were out enjoying the day.
BAL248 001.jpg
We came across these musicians and listened to them for awhile. They were excellent. When they played, you knew you were in Poland.
BAL249 001.jpg
You could tell by his face that they were playing a sad piece of music. I wondered what it was.
BAL251 001.jpg
Even the little ones were out playing music.
BAL252 001.jpg
I felt somewhat sorry for this child. I wish she could have been outside playing with her friends.
BAL253 001.jpg
On the way back to the ship, we saw a lot of buildings like this that were still in pretty sad shape. It was hard to believe that people were actually living in them.
BAL254 001.jpg
These housing units seemed a lot better, although I heard many families lived together in one unit.
BAL255 001.jpg
The ship is heading out the other side of the channel. There were a lot of these old boats laying around.
BAL256 001.jpg
Sweet photo.
BAL257 001.jpg
There were a lot of waves from people as the ship went out. These guys were doing some fishing and swimming.
BAL258 001.jpg
Once we pass this lighthouse, we will once again be in the Baltic Sea.
BAL259 001.jpg
We had a day at sea before we reached Dover. I got this photo of Erica looking at the map that showed the route we had taken.
BAL260 001.jpg
This sure caused some excitement. We came across this empty boat, but no one knew what had happened to the people that were in it. The ship made a huge circle looking for anyone that might be floating in the sea, but no one was found.
BAL261 001.jpg
My girl loves to sing.
BAL262 001.jpg
One more plum for the road!
BAL263 001.jpg
As the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end." This was our last night to watch the sunset from the ship.
BAL264 001.jpg
Our bags had to be packed and put out in the hall.
BAL265 001.jpg
The following morning we left the ship, took the drive back to London, on to the airport, and are now flying home. Adam lucked out with three seats to sleep on.
BAL266 001.jpg
It was nice to see land after that long flight.
BAL267 001.jpg
So the sun sets on a wonderful, fun and memorable trip with my two kids. It couldn't have been any better, and we will always cherish these great memories we had together.
